Mojave Desert Tortoise, Gopherus agassizii, has been a concern among scientists, park staff and the local community for decades. Desert tortoises in the Mojave and Colorado deserts west and north of the Colorado River (Gopherus agassizii) were listed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) as threatened on April 2, 1990. Gopherus agassizii has been on The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species since 1996.

The Joshua Tree, Yucca brevifolia and The Mojave Desert Tortoise, Gopherus agassizii are both at threat. Land Management and Plant Conservation efforts by the local community need support. In 2020, both have been listed as temporary candidate for CESA.
